Nicolas Aubert: Me and Nilvalor tie up the gnome with rope.
Gnome: You don't have to do that!
Gnome: Listen, this place is more dangerous than you think, even without Gaedren.
Gnome: I can help you find what you're looking for. You're after Gaedren's loot, no?
Nicolas Aubert: We are after what he has stolen.
Gnome: I don't know where the old man kept his stuff. Lord knows I've looked everywhere for it. But I've never been in his room, and that's where I would search.
Gnome: There are three dangers on the way there.
Gnome: I can tell you all three if you promise to let me go
Nicolas Aubert: Before we do anything, how is everyone faring? I can heal us.
Nicolas Aubert: Except for Gaedren. We should end his life as a mercy to the city.
Nilvalor: I'm hurt pretty badly, Nicolas.
Nilvalor: We shouldn't kill him. He belongs to the authorities.
Nicolas Aubert: He has too many of the city's officials in his pocket. That would just give him another ticket to freedom.
Kaleb Granzen: I raise my rapier to Gaedren's throat.
Nilvalor [Common]: Stop. You don't have to do this.
[understood by: Nicolas Aubert, Kaleb Granzen, Nilvalor]

Once Nicolas and Nilvalor come out on the boardwalk, you hear its wood start to creak and groan alarmingly.
Gnome: Quickly, step out of the boardwalk, you fools!
Nicolas Aubert: We need to move somewhere safer, especially if the gnome is telling the truth. Trying to take Gaedren with us will put us all in danger too.
Saying this, the gnome ducks back into the doorway.
Kaleb Granzen: I slit Gaedren's throat.
Kaleb Granzen: It is done.
Nicolas Aubert: Follow him, quickly!
[ROUND 13]
[TURN] Male Half-Orc Warrior
Nilvalor I quickly run back inside following the gnome.
Nilvalor: [SKILL] Acrobatics [d20-3 = 16]
[TURN] Nilvalor
[TURN] Nicolas Aubert
Nicolas Aubert: I follow Nilvalor with a little more caution, noticing the weight of his footsteps on the boards.
Gnome: As long as you walk slowly and keep some distance between you, you can use the boarwalk fine.
Nicolas Aubert: Let me heal us now, and then we should discuss the gnome's terms.
Kaleb Granzen: I carefully start dragging Gaedren by the arm back towards the entrance.
Nicolas Aubert: I channel energy.
Nicolas Aubert: [d6 = 6]
A burst of energy emanates out of Nicolas and heals everyone around him.
Gnome: Listen, I will give you one of out three dangers as a show of good faith.
Gnome: You can test it to see I am telling the truth.
Kaleb Granzen: I start methodically searching Gaedren's body.
Gnome: And then you untie me, and I tell you the other two, and I go my way.
Nicolas Aubert: We're listening.
Gnome: I want your promise! Not that guy's [pointing at Kaleb]. Yours, and his [pointing at you and Nilvalor].
Nicolas Aubert: Very well. If you help us, I see no reason to harm you. Just don't try anything funny.
Nilvalor I sense the gnome's motive.
Nilvalor: [SKILL] Sense Motive [d20+4 = 16]
Kaleb Granzen: [d20 = 1]
Nicolas Aubert: [SKILL] Sense Motive [d20+8 = 26]
Nicolas tries to get a sense of whether the gnome is bluffing, but he appears to be sincere.
Kaleb looks over Gaedren's body and finds a dagger, a very fine-looking hand crossbow with some bolts, and two keys: a brass and a rusty iron one. In addition, Gaedren's padded armor seems expensive too.
Kaleb Granzen: I pick up everything Gaedren was carrying except his armour and go back to retrieve the two crossbows.
Nicolas Aubert: The gnome doesn't appear to be trying to deceive us. Kaleb, I think we should trust him. We need info.
Nilvalor [Common]: Kaleb, we should have talked it over before you decided to kill Gaedren.
[understood by: Nicolas Aubert, Kaleb Granzen, Nilvalor]
Gnome: So, we have a deal.
Gnome: Right?
Kaleb Granzen: There was no way Gaedren ever would have faced justice. This was the only way.
Gnome: Why don't you have your moral debate over drinks at the bar later, and let's get this over with now?
Gnome: I will give you my first tip, and then you untie me.
Nicolas Aubert: I agree with this, what about you two?
Kaleb Granzen: He won't believe anything I would say. It's up to you.
Nilvalor [Common]: Alright, tell us about the danger.
[understood by: Nicolas Aubert, Kaleb Granzen, Nilvalor]
Gnome: There is a secret door to Gaedren's den in the ship's hold. However, there are some nasty spiders down there that for some reason only let Gaedren pass. If you carry his body with you... they just might leave you alone. I don't think they KNOW him. He must have some trick on him, some repellant or enchantment.
Gnome: That secret door leads to his den.
Gnome: That's the only place in the fishery I haven't been to.
Gnome: I bet his loot is in there. At any rate, I've looked everywhere else and found nothing.
Gnome: The old man must be loaded. If you make it all the way there, you'll be set for life I bet.
Gnome: HOWEVER.
Gnome: There are two more dangers.
Gnome: Untie me and step away from me, and I will tell you.
Nicolas Aubert: Very well. Perhaps give us your name too?
Kaleb Granzen: I say we let our new friend test out his theory by making him carry Gaedren's body.
Gnome: I am Hookshanks.
Hookshanks: I told you about the secret door, and I warned you about the spiders.
Hookshanks: The theory is just a theory.
Hookshanks: A friendly tip. I am not responsible if it doesn't work.
Hookshanks: I couldn't try it myself because... I didn't have Gaedren's body.
The gnome chuckles to himself at that.
Nilvalor [Common]: Tell us about the other two dangers and then we will untie you.
[understood by: Nicolas Aubert, Kaleb Granzen, Nilvalor]
Nilvalor: [SKILL] Diplomacy [d20+6 = 20]
Hookshanks: A deal's a deal guys. I wanna help you out, but you gotta help me out. Just untie me and step away from me, and we can get this over with.
Kaleb Granzen: Tell us one more thing now and the last thing after we free you. That is more than fair after you tried to stab us in the back.
Nicolas Aubert: I think we should honour our word, don't you agree Nilvalor? Hookshanks can't do us harm now anyway, and he seems sincere. I'm going to untie him.
Hookshanks: Cheers friend, you won't regret it.
Hookshanks: I should really be charging you guys for this. You should throw some gold my way if you get to Gaedren's loot.
Kaleb Granzen: I scowl in disapproval but remain silent.
Nilvalor unties Hookshanks.
Hookshanks starts to walk between you and out the door.
Nicolas Aubert: I step aside but keep my eyes on him.
Kaleb Granzen: I will leave the decision up to you two but I don't think this is wise.
Hookshanks: Okay so, tip number 2.
Hookshanks: There's a jigsaw shark that spends most of his time hanging out here. I guess we throw so much fish scrap in the water that he's made it his home.
Hookshanks: Don't fall in the water.
Hookshanks: Tip number 3.
Hookshanks: Gaedren keeps a pet alligator in his den, he calls him Gobblegut.
Hookshanks: Stay as far away as you can from the pool in the middle of Gaedren's den.
Hookshanks: And with that, I bid you good luck and farewell.
Hookshanks starts carefully backing away from you.
Nicolas Aubert: Thank you. If we ever meet again, remember that we keep our word.
Kaleb Granzen: I see no reason to doubt there is a shark or an alligator but are you sure you trust him about the spiders not attacking Gaedren?
Hookshanks: There's another way to get down to his den.
Nicolas Aubert: What is it?
Hookshanks: Go to Yargin's office. You met Yargin, the foppish fool.
Hookshanks: One of the floorboards behind the chair in the corner of the room is a trap door.
Hookshanks: Be careful though because that drops you right in the alligator's pool...
Hookshanks: Alligator or spiders!
Hookshanks: Best of luck guys, I am off.
And with that he turns around and runs into the night.
Nicolas Aubert: Farewell.
Nicolas Aubert: I go inside and strip Gaedren of his fancy-looking armour.
Nicolas Aubert: This armour looks expensive, knowing Gaedren it will provide you better protection than whatever it is you're wearing, Kaleb.
Kaleb Granzen: Maybe one of you could search the office while I put this on.
Nicolas Aubert: Let's search the orc's body too. We should stay together, who knows what other traps are around here.
Kaleb Granzen: I prefer my old armour. Maybe this set is Gaedren's secret for not being attacked by the spiders?
Nicolas Aubert: I light my morningstar again.
Nicolas Aubert: Light
Kaleb Granzen: I shake the dog and examine its collar.
Kaleb Granzen: I search the half-orc's body.
Kaleb Granzen: I search the half-orc's body.
Nicolas Aubert: Nilvalor, you should move ahead of Kaleb once we leave the room. You're the strongest of us.
The half-orc wears a chainmail and carries a flail, a composite longbow with some arrows, and two potions.
He also caries 72 gp.
Kaleb Granzen: I take the potions, the gold and the longbow and arrows.
Nicolas Aubert: I take the chainmail and flail.
Nicolas Aubert: Let's split the gold between us.
Kaleb Granzen: Sure.
Nicolas Aubert: I put on the chainmail.
Kaleb Granzen: What should we do next? The spiders or the alligator? We could try throw the half-orc's body through the trapdoor so that the alligator isn't hungry when we approach from the other direction.
Nicolas Aubert: Not a bad idea. Let's search Yargin's office first and then test the entrance with the spiders.
The stink in this room, a mixture of fish and sweat, is enough to make the eyes water. To the east, a large wooden trough holds a hideous mound of half-rancid fish, seaweed, and brine. Filthy river water and fish blood stain the floor around this trough. A pair of wooden chutes lead from this trough through holes in the eastern wall into a larger room beyond. To the west, a desk and chair sit in one corner while a tall cabinet sits in the other.
Kaleb Granzen: There is a desk. This must be the office.
Nicolas Aubert: I search for the hidden trapdoor behind the chair.
Kaleb Granzen: I search the cabinet.
Nicolas drops on the floor and looks for loose floorboards but he finds none.
The cabinet is locked.
Nicolas Aubert: I don't think this is the right room.
Kaleb Granzen: I try the two keys I picked up.
None of the keys fit.
Kaleb Granzen: [SKILL] Disable Device [d20+7 = 13]
Kaleb tries to unlock the cabinet but fails.
Kaleb Granzen: [SKILL] Disable Device [d20+7 = 10]

After a couple of tries, Kaleb manages to unlock the cabinet. Inside there are six small pouches.
Kaleb Granzen: I inspect the pouches.
Nicolas Aubert: I'm going to check the next room.
Nicolas Aubert: Once you're done.
Kaleb Granzen: Are you sure this is the wrong room? Did you look under the chair?
The pouches contain petty cash. Four of them have 50 cp each, and two of them 50 sp each.
Nicolas Aubert: There might be others chairs in this place. None of the floorboards moved under this one.
Kaleb Granzen: Then let's keep moving.

Nilvalor [Common]: Watch out with the trap door. It drops right into the pool.
[understood by: Nicolas Aubert, Kaleb Granzen, Nilvalor]
Nicolas Aubert: I'll tread cautiously.
A single desk sits in the middle of this room, with a moldy chair pushed up against it. A small pile of ratty furs and straw is heaped under the desk.
Nicolas Aubert: I carefully drop down and check the floorboards for any loose ones.

Nicolas Aubert: [SKILL] Perception [d20+5 = 6]
Nilvalor I dip my tongue into the potion.
Nilvalor: [SKILL] Perception [d20+4 = 22]

[understood by: Nicolas Aubert, Kaleb Granzen, Nilvalor]
Nilvalor: [SKILL] Perception [d20+4 = 7]
Nicolas Aubert: Let me try.
Nicolas Aubert: [SKILL] Perception [d20+5 = 13]
No loose floorboards here either.
Nicolas Aubert: Nothing here either. Let's keep moving.
Kaleb Granzen: We should search the room carefully.
Kaleb Granzen: [SKILL] Perception [d20+4 = 12]
Nicolas Aubert: I search the room and table while moving through the room.
Nicolas Aubert: [SKILL] Perception [d20+5 = 9]
The window is boarded up, like all the windows in this place you've seen so far.
Nilvalor: [SKILL] Perception [d20+4 = 14]
You all spend a few minutes checking the room and the floor, but find nothing out of the ordinary.
A wooden desk sits in one corner of this room, its side preventing the western door from opening all the way. The table is heaped with dozens of slate boards covered with chalk scrawls, while to the east a cabinet slouches against the wall.
Kaleb Granzen: Is this the right room?
Nicolas Aubert: The door seems to be partially blocked. Can you squeeze in?
Kaleb Granzen: I think so.
Kaleb Granzen: [SKILL] Escape Artist [d20+7 = 22]
Kaleb deftly squeezes through the half-open doorway.
Nicolas Aubert: Check what's on the table.
Kaleb Granzen: I move the desk clear of the door.
Kaleb Granzen: I search the cabinet.
Nicolas Aubert: I examine the boards on the table.
The slates on the table are covered with transaction records, addresses of customers, and other accounting notes.
Nicolas Aubert: This might be it.
Nicolas Aubert: I carefully look around the floorboards of the room.
The cabinet contains scrolls that appear to have the same type of information as the boards on the table.
Nicolas Aubert: [SKILL] Perception [d20+5 = 13]
Nilvalor I search the floorboards behind the chair in the corner.
Nilvalor: [SKILL] Perception [d20+4 = 9]
Nilvalor finds nothing.

Nicolas Aubert: Maybe we're wasting time. We know there's another way in, right? We need to test the theory with the spiders.
Nicolas Aubert: Nilvalor, can you carry his body? and Kaleb, you also have his equipment.
Kaleb Granzen: I don't see what other option we have.
Nilvalor [Common]: Hookshank said it was a secret door in the ship's hull.
[understood by: Nicolas Aubert, Kaleb Granzen, Nilvalor]
Nicolas Aubert: Let's go.
Nilvalor [Common]: If we can't find the right floorboard here, I'm not sure what luck we have.
[understood by: Nicolas Aubert, Kaleb Granzen, Nilvalor]
Nicolas Aubert: I emit my divine energy to heal the group.
Nicolas Aubert: [d6 = 5]
Nicolas Aubert: Let's make sure we've searched everything before we go to Gaedren's den.
A pair of bunk beds sit against the far wall of this room on either side of a boarded-over window.
Nicolas Aubert: Doesn't seem to be anything here. Shall we go?
Nilvalor [Common]: Hey what about the other door back here?
[understood by: Nicolas Aubert, Kaleb Granzen, Nilvalor]
Nicolas Aubert: Let's take a quick look.
Nicolas Aubert: Kaleb, are you coming?
Nicolas Aubert: Those boards look unsafe.
Nicolas Aubert: These ones are locked. Maybe you can try Kaleb.
Kaleb Granzen: [SKILL] Disable Device [d20+7 = 22]
Kaleb easily unlocks the door.
A fifteen-foot-wide loading dock abuts the side of the building here.
Nicolas Aubert: I'm not sure if we'll find anything useful out there, and the floor looks unsteady.
Kaleb Granzen: Maybe we should just head towards the spiders.
Nicolas Aubert: Agreed.
Nilvalor [Common]: What about the locked door back down to the south?
[understood by: Nicolas Aubert, Kaleb Granzen, Nilvalor]
Nicolas Aubert: We could try breaking it down I suppose.

Nicolas Aubert: I think we've found all the secrets we can. I'm getting sick of the stench of fish. Let's head to the ship.
Kaleb Granzen: We should try hurry a little. More of them could appear eventually.
Nicolas Aubert: Don't forget to grab Gaedren.
Nilvalor [Common]: Kaleb, can you come back to pick up Gaedren?
[understood by: Nicolas Aubert, Kaleb Granzen, Nilvalor]
Nilvalor: I bend down to pick up Gaedren's body.
Hookshanks: Nilvalor picks up the body and slings it over his shoulder.
Kaleb clambers up on the deck and walks straight into the mast.
Kaleb Granzen: [SAVE] Reflex [d20+6 = 7]
You hear a painfully familiar crashing sound, and Kaleb groaning as he appears to have been hurt by something.
Hookshanks: [d6 = 4]
Nicolas Aubert: I go through the window onto the ship.
[TURN] Male Half-Orc Warrior
[TURN] Kaleb Granzen
Kaleb Granzen: I drink a potion.
Kaleb Granzen: I drink the potion.
Hookshanks: [d6 = 4]
Kaleb Granzen: I run to the south.
Through the hole in the ceiling, you can see a faint shaft of moonlight, and the young wizard's body in the center of it.
It's eight feet away from you, and with its reference you can roughly steer towards the south where you know the staircase is, and safety.
As you run in terror towards your right, you hit the side of the staircase. The bump is a welcome feeling as it tells you your calculation was correct. You make a slight change of course and run up the stairs to the cabin.
[TURN] Nicolas Aubert
Nicolas Aubert: I help Nilvalor carry Gaedren onto the deck.
Nicolas bumps up against the mast, just like Kaleb had done moments earlier.
Nicolas Aubert: Kaleb, are you alright? We heard the noise.
Kaleb Granzen: I clutch my chest and breath heavily.
Kaleb Granzen: I'm fine. Somehow.
Nicolas Aubert: Let's move cautiously below. If this trick with Gaedren doesn't work we'll have to deal with the spiders again.
Kaleb Granzen: I switch to my rapier.
Nilvalor [Common]: Kaleb, you are lucky, my friend. I nearly thought you were going to suffer the same fate as Addison.
[understood by: Nicolas Aubert, Kaleb Granzen, Nilvalor]
Kaleb Granzen: I don't feel lucky so much as stupid.
Nicolas Aubert: I don't feel much smarter going down to where he died, but we don't have many other options.
Nicolas Aubert: Nilvalor, let's go. I'll provide us light.
Nilvalor [Common]: Lead the way with your light. I'll follow closely.
[understood by: Nicolas Aubert, Kaleb Granzen, Nilvalor]
Nicolas Aubert: Kaleb, you stay close as well.
Kaleb Granzen: Try and take count of the spiders before we get closer. Let's just all get into the room first and stay on the side furthest from them.
